Welcome to Early Years at St John’s!

We want every child to feel happy, safe and excited to learn. Our EYFS curriculum follows the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework and Development Matters, offering rich, purposeful learning experiences.

We aim to give children a strong start by helping them to:

  • Develop communication, language and early literacy
  • Build confidence, independence and positive attitudes
  • Explore maths through practical, meaningful experiences
  • Understand themselves and the world around them
  • Enjoy a broad, balanced curriculum that prepares them for Year 1

Children learn through a mix of:

  • Play‑based learning
  • Adult‑guided sessions to introduce new skills and vocabulary
  • A language‑rich environment
  • Continuous provision indoors and outdoors
  • Inclusive practice, adapting support for every child

We also embed the Characteristics of Effective Learning: playing and exploring, active learning, and thinking creatively and critically.

Our curriculum covers the seven EYFS areas:

Prime Areas:

  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development
  • Personal, Social & Emotional Development

Specific Areas:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts & Design

Children's learning is observed daily by all members of the Early Years team and assessments made. We use ongoing observations, a baseline assessment and individual Learning Journeys to track progress and plan next steps. Support is given early where needed.

We value strong partnerships with families through:

  • Regular communication
  • Home‑learning ideas
  • Opportunities to share learning
  • A supportive transition into school and into Year 1
